Bryant and Veroff (2007) assert that savoring is an act of attending to, appreciating, and magnifying positive experiences. According to them, it includes three forms of enjoyment:
Enjoy an indulgent food and wine experience this summer that caters specifically to senior adults. With plant-based cuisine, global fusion flavors, frozen treat extravaganzas, and more – you can experience the latest culinary trends while creating lasting memories!
Michelin-starred restaurants
Michelin-starred restaurants are a mark of culinary excellence, and although Michelin may be best known for its tires, their company also launched guidebooks in the 1900s that included ratings from anonymous reviewers. The Michelin Guide has over 300 restaurants worldwide that currently boast three stars on its star system. United States cuisine boasts several Michelin-star restaurants that provide world-class dining experiences, including Benu, a three-star establishment located in San Francisco serving Asian cuisine. At Season, one of Corey Lee’s signature dishes includes filet of beet with creamed spinach and pillowy pomme souffle. Saison, another three-star restaurant led by Joshua Skenes’ contemporary American cuisine features items like roast squab served up with bone marrow and caviar for dessert!
Michelin also awards restaurants with one or two stars and the Bib Gourmand designation that provide excellent cuisine at reasonable prices. Unlike popular review systems such as Yelp, Michelin does not judge decor or table settings but solely rates food quality – something which makes its star rankings and the Bib Gourmand distinction highly esteemed among chefs in culinary circles.
Romantic dinners
Home-cooked meals are always the ideal way to celebrate special events or plan romantic evenings with loved ones, but as a senior with specific dietary restrictions it can be more complex to cook for two and remain healthful while meeting these requirements. Luckily there are plenty of dishes which meet this criteria and make the occasion memorable!
For instance, this elegant chicken Marsala recipe offers an easy yet flavorful take on classic dish. Sauteed mushrooms in butter and drippings are then piled onto lightly breaded chicken pieces and finished off with an aromatic pan sauce for an unforgettable finish – and gluten-free and low in calorie count to boot!
Another delicious option is this Lowcountry twist on French bouillabaisse, featuring delicate white fish, little neck clams, mussels and saffron in a rich broth suitable for scooping up with crusty bread. Perfect for romantic date night dinner! This light yet flavorful option features low sodium levels.
Try this flavorful and creamy wilted cabbage with bacon and eggs recipe, or these slow cooker salmon fillets with licorice-forward fennel and subtly sweet leeks from your slow cooker. And don’t forget dessert! Our chocolate lava cake will surely impress with its surprise molten center – all these recipes require minimal prep time for optimal results!
Food markets
Silver Horizons, a nonprofit in San Francisco, hosts senior food markets to give low-income seniors access to free groceries. Each market features fresh produce, bread, meat, toiletries and pet food – in addition to music and seating areas with wide aisles and bright lighting – however a gerontologist from Weill Cornell Medical College cautioned against their visual stimulation and loud music being overwhelming for anyone experiencing cognitive challenges.
Napa’s Oxbow Market provides ample dining options that will satisfy even the pickiest diner, from innovative tacos at C Casa Taqueria and classic Jew-ish fare at Loveski Deli to fresh oysters at Hog Island Oyster Co.
